Instruktorzy językowi- Language Instructors

Thank you for your interest in teaching at Berlitz in Poland

Visa Requirements

Unless you are British, Irish or Swedish, you will need to have a permit to reside, and ultimately work in Poland, for any period of time. Further information on obtaining the relevant permits can be obtained from the Polish embassy or local passport office. To be eligible for employment please be sure that you have obtained all the appropriate documentation and permits. Please contact Berlitz Poland before you come to Poland so that we can provide you with the proper documents.

Hiring Procedure

Once we have received your application, we will contact you regarding an interview. Interviews are held at the language center during regular office hours. If you reside outside of Poland, please inform us as to when you are planning to be in the country so that we can set up a personal interview at the center to which you are applying. Please note that any costs incurred while travelling to the interview are covered by the applicant. After successful completion of the interview process, you will be invited to attend the Berlitz Instructor Training. This will also be held at one of our language centers and is free of charge.

Teaching Contracts

Due to the nature and range of programs offered by Berlitz, we offer new instructors freelance contracts. Under such conditions, the working hours are flexible and may change from week to week depending on customer requests and the demand for lessons.

Residence Permit

You must, under Polish law, declare and register yourself with the relevant local authority in your host town or city. This is an important point for tax purposes, etc. Further information regarding addresses, departments or contact people can be obtained locally from Berlitz Language Centers.

Getting Started

Our experience has shown that you will initially need to bring approximately $2,500-$3,000 to budget for acquiring an apartment or similar accommodation, day-to-day living expenses, and miscellaneous expenses that can be incurred. It is necessary to open a bank account on arrival, which facilitates the transfer of monthly salaries, payment of bills, etc.

Economic Snapshot

Poland has been one of the successful transition economies. GDP growth had been strong and steady in 1993-2000 but fell back in 2001-02 with slowdowns in domestic investment and weakness in the European economy. The privatization of small and medium state-owned companies and a liberal law on establishing new firms have allowed for the vibrant development of a private business sector. The government's determination to enter the EU as soon as possible affects most aspects of its economic policies.

Culture Tips

  • 1. A handshake is the typical greeting in Poland, though men might kiss the extended hands of women. When meeting a male/female couple, men always shake hands with the woman first. Women who are close friends will kiss each other on both cheeks.
  • 2. Remain formal until cued otherwise. Use titles and last name for yourself and your spouse, and when addressing anyone.
  • 3. There may be some introductory chit-chat in social conversations, although Poles usually move to substance rather quickly. If you make invitations, be prepared to carry them out. If you are invited, be prepared to accept and go. In general, relationships for Poles are demanding and intense.
  • 4. Poles expect and insist on order. Your neighbors might tell you to do certain things. You will be instructed when you do not observe certain innate regulations.
  • 5. Do not expect close relationships to develop merely because of proximity or neighborliness, especially in cities.
  • 6. Sunday is the traditional day for visiting friends and family in Poland. If invited to a home, bring flowers or good chocolates or desserts.
  • 7. Don't expect much conversation during the meal. Wait until afterward, when everyone will spend some time relaxing and talking. Always finish your first helping. Taking a second helping shows that you enjoy the food, and it is all right not to finish it if you become full.
  • 8. Poles frequently gesture while they are talking, either to emphasize a point that they are trying to make or express emotion about the subject at hand.
  • 9. Pay attention to when shops are open and closed. The hours can vary and are usually not as customer-accommodating as in the States-stores close earlier in most cases, and may not be open at all on weekends. "Customer service" is different from "service", and customer service is only slowly being understood.
  • 10. Poles do not necessarily queue up for buses, etc. In public, there can be much pushing and jostling. They generally do not yield if you say, "excuse me"-they are determined to be served and to be taken seriously, but also expect that they will be ignored, which is always why there seems to be such "insistence" to what they say and do.
  • 11. Passengers usually help the elderly and mothers with baby carriages to get on and off buses/tram cars. People are expected to observe public courtesies, those who do not are labeled as "prymitywny", or primative.
